Destination Wedding in Sri Lanka: An Indian and Chinese Wedding by the Ocean

This wedding was featured in Vogue India*, Keyur and Heather's destination wedding in Sri Lanka was a beautiful coming together of two cultures, two families, and guests travelling from across the world. Choosing Sri Lanka as a meeting point for loved ones flying in from India, Malaysia, London, and beyond, the couple hosted their celebrations across Anantara Kalutara Resort and Avani Kalutara Resort, surrounded by the island's stunning coastline and tropical landscapes.

The celebrations began with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, honouring Heather's heritage through rituals centred around gratitude, family, and respect for elders. Thoughtful details and cultural touches created an atmosphere that encouraged guests to immerse themselves in traditions many were experiencing for the very first time. As evening fell, floating lanterns illuminated the celebrations, symbolising new beginnings for the couple.

The following day embraced Keyur's Gujarati roots with a traditional Mandvo ceremony before family and friends gathered for the wedding festivities. What made the weekend particularly memorable was how naturally both families embraced each other's customs, creating a celebration that felt deeply personal while introducing guests to traditions from both cultures.

As storm clouds gathered on the wedding day, plans for an outdoor beach ceremony shifted indoors. Yet the change only added to the story. Keyur's baraat carried on in full spirit, with music, dancing, and celebration setting the tone before the couple exchanged vows beneath a beautifully designed mandap. One of the most touching moments of the weekend was watching Heather's 94-year-old grandmother travel across countries to be present and enthusiastically join the celebrations.

The wedding concluded with an elegant reception filled with heartfelt speeches, live music, Sri Lankan hospitality, and a packed dance floor. Set against the beauty of Sri Lanka and enriched by traditions from both sides of the family, Keyur and Heather's wedding was a reminder that the most meaningful destination weddings are those that celebrate not just a couple, but the cultures, stories, and people that have shaped them.
